Didge's Biography

didgeKenya’s intro to the ethereal vibe of urban soul comes in the form of a dimple-faced crooner called Didge. A 24 year old (who seems to carry more musical experience than belies his age) has been able to blend Soul and RnB, with an injection of hip-hop, laced with a jazz flavor all infused with that all-important local element – creating what can only be described as “ Swa’RnB” (or Swahili RnB), The message behind his interpretation of urban sound is:

“Real realness” in any situation- no hype, just the way it is. It is life in poetry, soul and colors-saying what you mean and meaning what you say…”

Think of entertainers in the vein of Maxwell, Eric Benet, Raphael Saadiq, Music Soul Child, Jill Scott, India Arie, Angie Stone etc. to date, it is safe to say that Kenya has yet been privy to music of such depth, feeling and emotion.

When listening to his creations, you can feel the goosebumps rise on the back of your neck, as he brings forth a salvo of deep, heartfelt lyrics, delivered in a voice wrapped in chocolate versatility.

HIStory starts in the least likely of places - Wind back to 1999: to a venue known as The Barn; free styling back stage holding his own against all comers, in the event dubbed the ‘free styling fantasy’ competition. Introspectively, “rap free styling” was his first love and skill that he will never be able to let go of, despite his irrefutable vocal range. Similar events followed, in which he enjoyed continued success; including the United Nations Drug Control Program (UNDCP) sponsored “Say No to Drugs” competition, where he not only performed… but won! Unbeknownst to Didge, one member of the audience was quietly taken aback by his raw energy, renowned music producer Tedd Josiah.

What followed was the discovery that the two shared a common love in ‘true’ urban soul, and together they developed a didgedynamic sound that was fundamentally Kenyan, yet would also be a true reflection of this unique genre. To date, the duo has developed a strong and successful working bond.

Didge’s discography includes collaborations with the crème de la crème of the Kenyan music industry, including Emmy award winner Alma Tuju (Niwewe tu), the late Poxxy Pressure (Taxi driver), Necessary Noize (Nishamtambua, Juu, Bless my room, Forever) Redsan (Maybe). Didge was supported by Coca Cola for his first single ‘Kitangoma’ and was also chosen as the company’s brand artist for East Africa.

Didge, who currently describes himself as a singer, songwriter and poet, attributes his current success to the Almighty. He has already worked on a number of tracks, each with varying styles and messages that bring to life the emotive feelings of laughter, sorrow and pain.
